Interests

Databases

I am interested in how databases work in general. Very often I can find myself reading about different databases or data store systems.

I was TA and instructor for Database Management Systems class at Pitt.

I also have practical experience with MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Neo4J, MongoDB, and Riak in several projects and/or classes.

Also Databases will be one of my topics for the Comprehensive examination (see section 6 on the page) which I plan to do in February, 2014.

Data Management and Integration

I am currently working on NSF supported project - Col*Fusion which aims at global-scale data integration. We are building the system which stands on more than 30 years of research and combines together ideas of Automatic and Crowd-based Schema Mapping and Record Linkage, Keyword search over databases, Schema Graph, Data Repositories, Peer-To-Peer data integration and sharing, Pay-As-You-Go data integration, Data Uncertainty and Provenance.

This project also utilizes and/or advances Databases, Crowdsourcing systems, Recommender systems, Machine learning and Data Mining.

See project (coming soon) page for more details.

Crowdsourcing Systems

I am interested in how techniques of crowdsourcing can be utilized for data and information management. Both my current projects (project pages are coming soon) are based on the idea of crowd of users performing small actions in the system (environment) whilst the system itself evolve and converges to the state which was not programmed in advance by the system developers.

While many machine learning and data mining algorithms were developed and are successfully used in real life, they are still not perfect and some tasks human can do much better. In addition, not all users of the system have to perform additional actions and might not even know that they contribute to the system evolution.

Also Crowdsourcing Systems will be one of my topics for the Comprehensive examination (see section 6 on the page) which I plan to do in February, 2014.

Recommender Systems

I am interested in applying techniques of Recommender systems for online education. For more informations SALT project page.

Also I am following development of Apache Mahout Machine Learning and Data Mining library and I used it for my experiments with the data collected in SALT system.

Machine Learning and Data Mining

I was always fascinated by the ideas of artificial intelligence and intelligent machines. However I don't have much training in that area. I am eager to learn more, but so far I have only taken online courses Machine Learning by Andrew Ng and Learning From Data by Yaser S. Abu-Mostafa

Currently I am looking at the Graph-based Machine Learning algorithms to apply in Col*Fusion project.

Also I am following development of Apache Mahout Machine Learning and Data Mining library and I used it for my experiments with the data collected in SALT system.
